Boo to the progressives opposing health reform

A compelling table here on how much money the Senate health-care bill will save ordinary families, in insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Progressives who say that the current bill is worse than nothing haven’t looked at the huge step forward represented by reform. There was never going to be a perfect bill. I complain, too, about some of the items dropped.  But something close to universal health care is finally going to get done in America, the only rich country where medical bills can bankrupt hard-working people and where they can suffer and die because they don’t have insurance. Obama is getting it done, which should be an occasion of great rejoicing. Once a reformed health system exists, progressives can make another run at the public option and other items that the political compromise left out. With no reform, there’s not even anything to fix—and nothing, zero, for the uninsured, whom progressives say they represent.
